[edit] Td5 Diesel Engine

Developed for the Series II Discovery under the codename of "Project Storm", the Td5 engine was intended to be part of a lineup of whole new engines developed by Land Rover. BMW decided to use existing engine technology for the Td4 and Td6 variations, but the Td5 remained in development as the Td4 would be underpowered in this application, and the Td6 wouldn't fit in the engine bay!

The five cylinder design uses camshaft driver injectors to achieve injection pressures of over 30,000psi.

Superseded by the Jaguar-derived TdV6 in the Series III Discovery

[edit] Power Improvements and re-mapping

Most of the later Td5 ECUs contain a 256k flash programmable EEPROM, which can be updated from the diagnostic interface. The upshot of this is that the engine can be "chipped" without opening the ECU. This is an advantage for the manufacturer - if problems are found in the map after production, it can be updated by the dealers at the next service. The facility has been welcomed by manufacturers of after-market power upgrades, who can use the same feature to re-program the fuelling without taking the car apart.

One of the most innovative approaches has been taken by Td5 Alive who offer an re-map by e-mail service to owners of the Nanocom.

[edit] Non-ECU Power Improvements

  • EGR blanking/removal
  • Exhaust changes
  • Larger intercooler
