[edit] Wheel Bearing Replacement

Some information from Joe Godfrey on replacing the front wheel bearings. LR do not list the bearing and only supply the whole hub at £279 + VAT. Joe's needed replacing and he got some bearings for £79 + Delivery from KAID LTD, an Independent LR specialist in Derbyshire, +44 (0)1332 781111, ask for David.

Bearings should also be available from your local Timken dealer.
All information written on the boxes is as below,

BM No. FTC3223B
RovNo. FTC3243B
BEARING ONLY NEW RR (TIMKEN)
QTY:1 64922 12/05/03
www.timken.com
NP275832 90VA1 (or that might be 90UA1)
200304 FR

Hope this saves someone some money.

I also got this update from Mike Roberston in South Africa. He says the basic reference for all the major bearing manufacturers is LM603049/011. Anybody in bearing industry worth their salt should recognize this number, current UK wholesale list price about UKP23.76. Push for good discount!

Alternatively check Nissan dealer for Terrano/Pathfinder front wheel inner to Nissan part number 40210-50W00 or old BL/Rover number GHB197 if some still around gathering dust

As if that isn't confusing enough, I've now been told that the information from Mike refers to the classic. Can anyone who has actually replaced the bearings confirm or deny this information?

And finally, David Sparkes offers this advice to anyone needing to remove them:

What both of us did was slacken off (a couple of turns only) the bolts that hold the hub carrier into the spider. Then hit the bolt heads. Don't try and do it all on one bolt, as the carrier twists in the spider. Basically you hit one, then go to the diagonally opposite one, and hit that. I could only access two bolts, but if you can get into all four, great. You need to do this until the carrier moves about a quarter of an inch.

Clean the rust off both the spider and the hub carrier mating surfaces, and use a water resistant grease when reassembling. Copper-xxxx is NOT water resistant. I use Duckhams Keenol.

I was changing the oil seals in the ends of the axle tubes, so never had to penetrate into the hub carrier itself.

The staked nut that needs replacing on the end of the drive shaft is part CDU1534L
