The P38A remained remarkably unchanged throughout it's history.

Introduced at the end of 1994, the range consisted of three engines and two trim levels. The 2.5 DSE was equipped with the BMW-derived, 6 cylinder, 2.5 litre turbo diesel, and the SE specificion - no sunroof, manual gearbox, and the mid-range audio system. The same spec with the latest GEMS-controlled 4.0 V8 was the 4.0 SE, and the 4.6HSE came with auto gearbox, electric sunroof, uprated stereo and some other gadgetry.

The demand for the manual box was pretty much non existant, so the auto box became standard fit. There was a revision to the 98 model year (introduced in late 97) which saw the 4.0 SE undergo some changes, such as the auto box (standard), leather seats (standard), revised alloys (16" taken from the original 4.6 HSE), sunroof (standard).

The biggest changes came in the 1999 model year, when they switched to the newer Thor variant of the V8 This also saw the introduction of side airbags. By 2000 model year (introduced late 1999) a major revamp was undertaken to combat the competition from the BMW X5. In came the Vogue and DHSE as well as the autobiography models. The 4.0 SE had the same refinements as the old 4.6 HSE, i.e. wood inserts on the doors, premium sound system etc, the Vogue saw the introduction of upgraded leather seats, sat nav, a new sound system and numerous other luxury upgrades. The DHSE lifted the refinement of the diesel, which was lagging sales, to match the HSE spec. The 2000MY white lights are a fairly common Upgrade to older vehicles.

The last P38A was produced in 2001.

Note the first FULL PRODUCTION VIN was MA300190, which went down the line sometime in June 1994.

Also note that the MODEL YEAR doesn't co-incide with the production year. A 1997 MY vehicle may have been manufactured in the latter part of 1996.

David Sparkes contributes this abbreviated table for P38A machines which shows the model year transition points:
