Released in 1999, the Discovery II retained the 300 series soft dashboard, but gained a redesigned body shell and cabin layout, extra boot space and a different set of engine options: the popular Td5 diesel, and a 4-litre V8 petrol engine.

Early Discovery II models sported a "Series II" logo on the rear door that was reminiscent of the earlier "series" Landrover badging.

In 2003 the Disco II, as it's affectionately known, underwent a largely cosmetic facelift with redesigned lights and some minor trim changes.

The Discovery II came in several specification levels:

• S - Base spec
• GS
• XS
• ES - "All the toys"

Later facelift models added an ES Premium specification.
